The source material is a collection of authentic mobile text messages. It was particularly important to realise a technical implementation that was suitable for cinema, so as not only to suggest or quote film as the selected media form, but rather to present it as fact to the viewer.
The film “Hysteria” shows the fever curve of a love story. In a 24-minute staccato of emotion-filled scenes, we become witnesses to that passion which all those who love, who fall in, and who fall out of love know all too well. Here, however, we learn of the highs and lows and the great sentiments in a turbulent relationship solely by means of a series of telephone calls carried out by the only visible and audible figure in the film with the object of her desire: she wallows and raves, enjoys and suffers, brings up problems and rages with the telephone at her ear. She sits, stands, walks, she stretches and prowls up and down like a tiger, sometimes in a Berlin apartment, sometimes in an apartment somewhere on the Italian coast – and the camera never leaves her side. Condensed as in a time lapse, the big little drama of moods and feelings is presented, but only as a half-dialogue without the voice, the face and the location of the opposite party, without the natural second transmitter and recipient in this age-old “amour fou” game. It is confusing, and annoying, and creates a strange distance, although the viewer is right there where the action is.
